Singer Monali Thakur has spoken out following allegations of sexual harassment against her team after her concert in Varanasi last month. The incident unfolded amidst claims of infrastructural negligence, which Monali had earlier criticised. Following her accusations, the event organisers alleged that her manager had sexually harassed a team member while intoxicated.

Taking to Instagram, Monali revealed that the event organisers have since apologised, and she expressed gratitude to the Uttar Pradesh Police for their intervention and for helping to bring the situation under control.

Reflecting on the “horrific” experience, Monali stated, “I hope this letter is sufficient to clear any confusion anyone might have had about the credibility of the false defamatory accusations made against my team and myself, as well as the treacherous and unethical conduct of the organisers. It has been deeply troubling for me to process the reckless and irresponsible behaviour of the event management company’s team.”

Singer condemns the laws

She condemned the misuse of laws intended to protect individuals from sexual harassment, labelling it “appalling and unacceptable.” She added, “Weaponising such laws for personal vendetta, ego satisfaction, or retaliation against those who refused to comply with unethical practices is a gross abuse of rights. It disrespects genuine survivors of these heinous crimes, undermining their courage in seeking justice. Such reckless actions damage the cause and create distrust around an issue that deserves the utmost seriousness.”

Recalling the events of December 22, Monali shared, “My team and I were subjected to severe negligence in basic infrastructural safety, false accusations of harassment, and life-threatening intimidation. This forced me to leave the stage after performing for 70 minutes. It is unacceptable to mistreat vendors, cheat them, or harass backstage crew, artist managers, or coordinators.”

She called for stricter regulations to protect performers and crew from exploitation, stating, “Such behaviour must never be tolerated. The live entertainment industry deserves a safe, professional, and respectful environment to thrive.”

Monali had earlier walked off stage, citing safety concerns and accusing organisers of being “irresponsible and unethical.” In response, the event organisers denied her claims, accusing her of harassment and attempting to tarnish their reputation.

This incident has highlighted the urgent need for better safety and ethical practices in the live entertainment industry.
